Knife Lake shares the border between the United States and Canada. It’s so large that the lake is broken up into sections commonly known as Northeastern Knife Lake and South Arm of Knife Lake, or SAKL. There’s also a bit of history that goes along with these waters. In 2007 the Ham Lake fire consumed 75,000 acres of forest, surrounding businesses and homes due to an unattended fire at a campsite. However, there were no fatalities. Knife Lake was also the home of the famous root beer lady, Dorothy Molter. She owned a resort in the BWCA before it became a wilderness area, and brewed root beer for paddlers coming through. You can also find an old Forest Service cabin hidden along the shore.
