Save the Boundary Waters is back at the Capitol for the MN Legislative Session

U.S. Senator Tina Smith speaks on the state capitol steps.

On February 17th, the Minnesota Legislature reconvened for the 2026 State Legislative session, and I was back in the halls of the Capitol as I am each session β€” fighting for the Boundary Waters.

While it felt exciting to be back in St. Paul, the first day of session was somber and atypical.

There was no business on the calendar β€” instead, the legislature held a beautiful and emotional ceremony to remember the life of Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their dog Gilbert, as well as an opportunity to celebrate the return of Senator John Hoffman.

Even in moments of reflection like this, the urgency of our work remains clear. During the State Legislative session, I am on the ground advocating for our Wilderness just about every single day β€” meeting with lawmakers about the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection bill (H.F 309 & S.F 875), and playing defense against harmful legislation and amendments.

Right now, amid federal attacks on the Boundary Waters, Minnesota's role is more important than ever. Our lawmakers must uphold environmental protections and defend the Boundary Waters.

On February 18th, we held a press conference on the steps of the Minnesota Capitol with U.S. Senator Tina Smith along with Ron Monson of Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters, Jason Zabokrtsky, owner and operator of Ely Outfitting Company, State Sen. Cwodzinski, State Rep. Kozlowski, and State Rep. Falconer encouraging our elected officials in Minnesota and across the country to stand up for this special place.

Join us in speaking up for the Wilderness: tell your MN lawmakers to protect the Boundary Waters watershed permanently from toxic copper mining!
