From May through October 2025, Minnesotans showed up in powerful ways across the state to stand up for the Boundary Waters. Through a series of Boundary Waters Forums—hosted by Save the Boundary Waters in communities from Rochester to Grand Marais—hundreds of people came together to learn, connect, and take meaningful action to protect America’s most visited Wilderness.

These gatherings were more than just events. They were moments of collective energy and hope, proof that people across Minnesota care deeply about this place and are willing to work to defend it. Each forum offered a space to learn about current threats to the Boundary Waters, hear from passionate speakers, and participate in hands-on advocacy workshops. From writing messages to state and federal lawmakers to learning how to use digital platforms for activism, Minnesotans left inspired and ready to act.

Across all the events, one thing was clear: Minnesotans are showing up. From cities to small towns, people from all walks of life came together with a shared purpose to protect a place that represents both solitude, connection, and community.

These events proved that when people learn, connect, and act together, real change is possible. The momentum from this event series continues to ripple outward, building a movement strong enough to ensure that this national treasure remains protected for generations to come.

Rochester Takes Action – July 8 at Cascade Meadow

The series kicked off in Rochester with a powerful evening featuring professional ski mountaineer and activist Caroline Gleich. Gleich spoke passionately about the need to protect public lands like the Boundary Waters, reminding attendees that “the edge of the Boundary Waters is the wrong place for copper mining.” The event also featured remarks from Executive Director Ingrid Lyons and interactive workshops where attendees practiced advocacy skills relevant to their local communities. Cascade Meadows was full of energy as people connected over refreshments, shared their stories, and picked up Boundary Waters stickers, buttons, and lawn signs to spread the word.

Mankato Takes Action – July 10 at Sibley Park Pavilion

Two days later, the movement continued in Mankato. Community members gathered at Sibley Park Pavilion to learn about the latest updates on the fight to protect the Wilderness. Local leaders and advocates spoke about what the Boundary Waters means to their communities and how to turn that passion into concrete action.

Duluth Takes Action – September 13 at Zeitgeist Arts

In Duluth, the forum brought together outdoor enthusiasts, students, and long-time supporters for a conversation about the future of the Wilderness. Save the Boundary Waters’ Duluth Organizer Ben Karlgaard kicked off the event, followed by a wilderness trip reflection from Sam Armacost. Then Sam Chadwick, Associate Director of Save the Boundary Waters, shared the latest on the campaign for permanent protection and hosted an inspiring Q&A with filmmaker and photographer Nate Ptacek. Attendees left energized, reflecting on how the Boundary Waters continues to shape the identity of northern Minnesota—and how advocacy keeps that legacy alive.

Twin Cities Takes Action – September 17 at Camp Fire Minnesota

The excitement continued in Excelsior in honor of Public Lands Day with outdoor storyteller and digital creator Alex Haraus. His presentation electrified the crowd, showing how everyday people can use social media to inspire real-world change. Haraus shared stories of viral campaigns that drove record public engagement in federal comment periods, and he encouraged Minnesotans to use their own voices to reach friends, family, and networks. Afterward, attendees participated in interactive sessions with Save the Boundary Waters staff, learning to craft effective Letters to the Editor and brainstorm local advocacy ideas. The energy in the room was palpable—people left ready to use their creativity and platforms to make a difference.

Grand Marais Takes Action – September 20 at the Cook County YMCA

The most recent event of the summer in Grand Marais brought the campaign home to the doorstep of the Boundary Waters itself. Locals and visitors gathered to celebrate their deep connection to the Wilderness and discuss how to keep it unspoiled for future generations. The day included music from Britt Malec, coffee and treats from Loons Nest on the Gunflint Trail, and heartfelt remarks from Ingrid Lyons alongside community advocates Ben Seaton of Hungry Jack Outfitters and M Baxley of Bear Witness Media and Paddle and Portage. It was a morning of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment.
