Highlights from our Ely Garden Party

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in mid-July, just outside of the Boundary Waters, the wildfire smoke cleared just in time for us to come together for the annual Save the Boundary Waters Garden Party. We gathered with over 200 supporters, neighbors, and friends to celebrate the hard work that has gone into protecting this incredible Wilderness and hear what’s next in the ongoing fight that still remains.

Held each summer on the shores of the Kawishiwi River (also ground zero of the proposed Twin Metals mine) this is our signature Northwoods event—a chance to gather in the place we’re fighting to protect, surrounded by the people who care most about its future.

Thanks to the generous support from those near and far, we raised $45,000. These critical funds are essential to continuing the next chapter of our work – one that demands even greater strength and commitment.

Ingrid Lyons, Executive Director, told the story of how Save the Boundary Waters was created and what we stand for. Despite small victories this year, she also shared a powerful message,

“We’ve made real progress, but the threats to the Boundary Waters are persistent, and powerful,” Ingrid shared. “It will take every one of us speaking up, showing up, and supporting this work to win permanent protections.”

Lacey Squier of Boundary Waters Connect took the stage to talk about the exciting opportunities for sustainable economic and community development in Ely and other Wilderness-edge communities. She encouraged attendees to get involved locally by supporting small businesses, volunteering, and even joining local boards. When we invest in our communities – just like we invest in protecting the Wilderness – we build something lasting. Something worth staying for and fighting for.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event. We look forward to gathering again next summer, after another year of hard work protecting the Wilderness we all love.
